Seven Reasons Why Christians Should Reject Mask Mandates

Updated: Jan 8

For the past two years in the U.S., there has been a great divide in opinions between Christians who believe that wearing masks equates to loving our neighbors and Christians who believe that not wearing masks is honoring to the Lord. In many ways, this is a highly subjective debate that should be carefully discussed, since our Christian liberty ought to be the standard practice for our judgement over this debate. It seems that the most reasonable way forward is for all followers of Christ to respect the liberty of other believers and move on to living out the Gospel of Christ.

There are Christians who have made the argument that wearing masks is equivalent with loving our neighbors, so there should be no exceptions to this rule. The idea is that one is loving to neighbor if one wears a mask, and one is unloving to neighbor if one does not wear a mask. This idea of "my way or the highway" is not loving! Love for neighbor does not "insist on its own way" (1 Corinthians 13:5).

The purpose of this discussion is two-fold. One purpose is to present a defense for the followers of Christ who prefer not to wear masks, to some degree. The second and more important purpose is to understand why we must reject the idea of mask mandates. The purpose of this discussion is not to attempt to prove that wearing masks is wrong, or less Christian-like than choosing not to wear masks. Again, this is absolutely an area of Christian liberty, in which we must have grace for differing opinions. There is no clear indication in scripture that followers of Christ must or must not wear masks at any time. Each Christian must seek wisdom from the Lord and make the best decision for themselves and for the sake of others.

Why we must reject mask mandates

Here are seven reasons why Christians must reject the idea of mask mandates...

  1. Mandating masks is a component of the "new normal", which is a smoke screen for a purge of our freedoms

  2. Mandating masks is intended to be a permanent change to our society, which indicates the related mandates were more likely designed as a power grab than they were about safety

  3. The mainstream media (which has a history of promoting half-truths, myths, and lies) has consistently praised the wearing of masks as a preventative solution to COVID, but has no tangible results to back up those claims

  4. Mandating masks was used as a precursor to mandating vaccines and potentially additional medical intrusions in the future

  5. The history of recent viruses (e.g., H1N1) in the U.S. prior to COVID didn't necessitate the forced wearing of masks

  6. There is scientific data that suggests masks do not prevent transmission of viruses

  7. There is scientific data that suggests wearing masks long-term can actually be unhealthy

There are several Biblical principles that must be considered in regards to the idea of not mandating masks, but we must also discuss the reasons why some Christians don't want to wear masks. For many followers of Christ, the desire to refrain from wearing masks has nothing to do with a lack of respect or care for others. We care very much for those who are sick (James 5:14). This stand we are taking is not about pretending we're strong or being flippantly disobedient to governing authorities. It is about being obedient to God. It is about fully recognizing the entire reality of the situation we're in. We take COVID seriously. In fact, many of us have family or friends that have been severely sick and/or died from COVID related causes. Yet, we also recognize that there is an ominous feeling to the current events (mask/vaccine mandates and vaccine passports) occurring in our country and our world, which we face due to a tremendous overreaction to COVID.

Love for God and neighbor

The attributes of the "new normal" do not seem to include encouragement for believers to depend upon Jesus, but to depend on the government instead. This "new normal" will likely lead to further restrictions for the Church and could further threaten our freedom to worship God. We know that not even the gates of hell will prevail against the Church (Matthew 16:18). Yet, we must continue to "fight the good fight" (1 Timothy 6:12) against any efforts of those who desire to crush the Church. It is quite possible that the "new normal" is one giant step towards establishing a world government, which Christians must stand against. So complying with mask mandates can be equated to being complicit with the "new normal" and potentially a global government, which is an ungodly idea, to say the least.

Love for God and love for neighbor requires followers of Christ to be concerned about the safety of others. But more importantly, it requires our concern for the Church's freedom to "go and make disciples" (Matthew 28:19). If there is any question that our freedom to obey the Lord in "going" (traveling restrictions) is being threatened, we must fight against that threat by continuing to go. And we must continue to meet in person (Hebrews 10:25) without restriction (the forced wearing of masks). We must stand for Christian liberty and allow others to choose their own medical paths, instead of mandating our ideas and opinions related to health upon other believers.

Bearing true witness

Believing and perpetuating the lies from the "experts" and the media is an example of bearing false witness against our neighbors (Exodus 20:16). If we contemplate God's truth's about sin (Romans 3:23) for even a short amount of time, it should be obvious that we're being lied to by the so-called "experts" so the government's will can be imposed on us. We're constantly bombarded with messages to blindly submit to our governing authorities. But we must remember that Jesus is our ultimate authority (Acts 5:29), not the government. We must desire His will above all others!

The idea of quarantining is a Biblical idea. However, the idea of quarantining healthy people is not. The Biblical idea of quarantines are intended for those who are sick (Leviticus 13:46). This same principle could also be applied to wearing masks. Healthy people do not need to wear masks in order for the sick to be protected. Additionally, natural immunity is an idea that God made our bodies strong enough to fight off many of the diseases and viruses we are exposed to. These simple ideas have been twisted with complicated and ridiculous arguments that defy the Word of God. We must not assist the enemy in driving fear into the hearts and minds of others by bearing false witness against the idea of quarantining only the sick. We must not seek some sort of false appeasement of others by forcing people to wear masks. And we must remember that natural immunity is a gift from God.

Submitting to our true governing authorities

The CDC has no legislative authority in this country. Therefore, wearing a mask in order to submit to "the government" in this instance, is not true submission to governing authorities. Wearing a mask in submission to the CDC is a false application of Romans 13:1. Wearing a mask in submission to Governors and Mayors who have declared unconstitutional mandates is a false application of submitting to our governing authorities. Elected officials or health experts who usurp the authority of lawmakers (Congress) by extending freedom restricting mandates due to an emergency that no longer exists, are breaking the law (the Supreme Law of the Land - the Constitution). In other words, any mandates from the CDC, Governors, and Mayors are illegal.

Furthermore, wearing a mask is a medical decision that is designed by God to be between the individual believer and Himself. It is simply not the state's jurisdiction to dictate medical decisions for individuals. After all, our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit. God commands us to glorify Him with our bodies (1 Corinthians 6:19-20), which confirms that medical decisions must not be mandated by the government. We must obey God!

End the senseless mandates

These are all valid reasons for why we should not err on the side of caution for the sake of safety anymore. These valid reasons to reject mask mandates also apply to the vaccine mandate and any other similar health related mandates. We're now in the third year of "15 days to slow the spread". Have we done anything to slow the spread by trusting the government and the mainstream media about the effectiveness of masks? How about any of the other restrictions that have been forced upon us?

Some of us have never worn masks. Some of us wore masks only in the very beginning. Some of us wore masks up until recently. Some of us still wear masks in rare instances, when we "have to", e.g., on an airplane. Some of us wear masks more frequently. Anyone who desires to wear a mask at any time and place, should absolutely be allowed to do so. And anyone who decides to not wear a mask at any time and place, should absolutely have that freedom as well. It is time to acknowledge that there is a battle being forced upon us, and we must fight back with the weapons God has given us (Ephesians 6:13). Whether or not we choose to wear masks, we must agree to put an end to these seemingly endless mandates and make worshiping God our new normal.
